The History of Lego

In 1916, Ole Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter that made houses and furniture for local farmers. Unfortunately in 1924, the workshop burned down due to a fire caused by Christiansen's two small children. Taking this as an opportunity to best his business, Christiansen rebuilt the workshop in a bigger and more effective place. During the Great Depression, he made stepladders and ironing boards, which soon gave him the inspiration to begin production toys. Some of Christiansen's early toys included cars, trucks and wooden pull toys.

In 1934, the word Lego was coined from the words leg godt, meaning 'play well'. It was then that Christiansen began producing the small, interlocking bricks, similar as we know them today. These were named self-operating Binding Bricks and were based off of samples of interlocking bricks from someone else toy company.

Lego

Although a creative idea, self-operating Binding Bricks were not favoured by children, and were often returned because of their lack to stay associated together.

In 1947, the factory then purchased a plastic moulding motor to focus on production plastic toys. At this point in time, wooden toys were more widely produced, putting Christiansen one step ahead of his competition. In the early 1950's, Christiansen's son, Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, became the Junior Vice President of the factory. His strong dedication helped to make plastic toys even more prosperous and popular. In fact, by 1951, plastic toys were half of the requested orders, production wooden toys second.

It was then in 1958 that the modern day Lego design was created. Hollow tubes were made to go underneath the bricks, creating the Lego toys to interlock with one someone else and stay put. Lego toys were swiftly more favoured as they were more carport to build with. As these sure changes were made, Ole Kirk Christiansen died, leaving his son to be the head of the factory. Shortly after, the customary wooden toy warehouse was destroyed in a fire, leaving the factory to focus solely on the output of plastic toys.

In 1963, Abs plastic was added to the Lego toys in place of cellulose acetate. Abs plastic made the toys stronger and held on to the rich colours that the toys are so often known for. These new Lego toys were made safer as well because Abs plastic is non-toxic.

In 1967, Duplo was introduced to the market, which are larger version of Lego toys made for children 5 and under. Lego has continued to grow to be an empire, well-known and loved across the world. The introduction of Legoland Parks have reached across the world as well, giving population of all ages the opportunity to build and generate anything their imagination allows them to.

My Child Has a Lego Obsession

We are happy when our kids search for Lego. It's construction, not destruction; it's creative, not mindless; it's peaceful, not violent. I love the noisy rattle of the Lego scrabbling that emanates from my boy's bedroom. However, when does it all become too much?

You know when your kid is obsessed with Lego... It's when he talks constantly about the next set on his list; when he bursts into tears at lights-off time because he's in the middle of working out some tricky design problem; it's when he can't hold a conversation without some mention of Lego; it's when he is willing to allow his sister to infiltrate his Lego with Bratz in the hope that he can convert her to the same Lego fixation that permeates his every waking moment.

Lego

We home school our children, and sometimes it is difficult to get our son to stop reasoning about Lego and work on a scheme or pay attention to his math or even just interact with us without the L-word.

Is this a problem? It might be. Then again, it might be just fine.

Think about the skills your child is developing as he plays (I am using the 'he' pronoun because it is usually, though not always, boys who design such a preoccupation). There are the distinct ones like using his imagination and stretching his creativity. But there are others too. As he manipulates those, often, tiny pieces, he is developing his fine motor skills and gaining coordination that will help with other dexterity-requiring tasks like handwriting and electronics. Lego helps his brain design by offering him problems to solve and logistics to work out.

As all this is happening those synapses are firing which build new neural pathways thus construction his brain, even as he sleeps. My son will often go to bed slightly troubled by a Lego problem he is trying to solve and then wakes with the clarification part or fully formed the next day.

What else?

Mathematics, English language, presentation skills, socializing, geography, history and media studies. In what way do you think Lego can help your child with all these subjects? How about dealing with emotional issues? How on earth could Lego help a child express and learn how to handle anger, frustration and disappointment? It can and it does.

Lego Death Star - building the Doomsday machine One Brick At A Time

In the Star Wars stories, the most malevolent element of the plot is the Death Star, the planet-destroying artificial moon that Emperor Palpatine was constructing in orbit nearby the moon of the planet Endor. It was the extreme doomsday weapon. Destroying it was the only opportunity Luke and his friends had to save the Alliance from definite destruction - if they were faced with an enemy that could destroy entire planets, they would have no opportunity at all.

Making maximum use of the flexibility of their basic product, and the very active imaginations of their build staff, Lego has created their own version of this excellent weapon, the Lego Death Star, which brings the Star Wars Saga into the reach of kids (of all ages) everywhere. This extraordinary set, with over 3,800 pieces - many of them specially designed for this set - creates the Death Star in great detail, presenting lots of opportunities to stage separate action sequences from the Star Wars films.

Lego

The completed model is 16 inches tall, and 16-1/2 inches in diameter. This set, Lego 10188, consists of three decks, each of which has a whole of separate sections with a range of functional purposes. One of the most recognizable is the Trash Compactor, where Luke, Leia, and Han nearly met their untimely ends. The compactor in the Lego Death Star has walls that can be rotated to close the chamber, crushing the trash - and any unfortunate individuals who happen to be in there at the time! another assuredly great aspect of this part of the model is the fact that the set includes the Dianoga monster that inhabits the compactor - and almost killed Luke.

Another great highlight of this set is the Super Laser weapon. This doomsday planet-destroying weapon is featured with green laser beams that voyage out from the edges of the dish and converge in the center to amplify the central beam. The weapon can rotate, and turn the angle at which it is aimed. These are just a few of the many appealing parts in this intricate model. Among the other weapons in this model are lasers and cannons that are found in the compartment near the Trash Compactor. These weapons can also be moved for aiming at separate targets.

Other assuredly spectacular details in this Lego Death Star building model are found in areas like the Tie Fighter bay, where Darth Vader's Tie Fighter (which is included!) can land. Many of the stations in the Death Star have assorted types of weapons consoles that can be manned by the Storm Troopers and other Imperial mini-figures that are included with the set. Overall, there are 24 separate character mini-figures included in this Death Star model.

The top deck of the Lego Death Star has sleeping quarters for the Imperial Storm Troopers, which are furnished with typical residential furniture. Also on that deck is a chamber with two duplicate laser cannons, and another room which can be a discussion room, with seven rotating chairs and a large table. This is typical of the level of detail that this set contains, which makes it a excellent platform for staging assorted Star Wars scenarios.

This set, Lego 10188, is assuredly the second version of the Death Star that Lego has produced. The first version, Lego 10143, was released in 2005. In unlikeness to the new set, which is rich in detail and has lots of prop pieces that can be used to recreate assorted scenes, this first version seems to have been intended to be mostly a static display model - although a extremely detailed one! The set, when completed, stands 25 inches high, and is 19 inches wide. It recreates the Imperial Death Star in its partially constructed state. There is even a scale-model Imperial Star Destroyer in orbit nearby the Death Star.

This Lego Death Star set is definite to be a hot item this year, particularly nearby Christmas time! If you want one for person on your gift list - or if you want it for yourself - it would be wise to act quickly, before you find out that it is temporarily (or permanently!) no longer available. A Closer Look at the New Lego Board Games

Lego has been in the building-toy line for some time and as part of that success, they have occasionally branched into other areas as well. One of the areas they have been thriving in is games. The Lego computer games for Star Wars, Batman, Indiana Jones and now Harry Potter have been extremely thriving and fun as well.

But Lego have an additional one sort of game on the market, one that receives a lot less publicity these days- board games. For the last year or so hints have been appearing that Lego would bring out a range of board-games based nearby their assorted themes together with Castles, Space, Atlantis and even licensed themes like Harry Potter. But who plays these anymore and would they be any good?

Lego

Well it turns out many habitancy still enjoy board games, especially families. And are they any good? Lego seems to think so because they didn't just release one, they have designed and produced a total of 18 titles so far. They are all driven by rolling dice rather than switching on computers and involve a range of skill sets that will challenge and entertain family member of all ages.

Being Lego there is of policy a building element to all the games and this is a great way to get younger fans into game play beyond computers. They all need more than one player so are a exquisite fit for families who want to join together after work and school. So far all the titles have been very well received with popular titles together with Minotaurus, Monster 4 and Lava Dragon.

Each title is unique in its layout and objective and it is a prestige to the designers that they advanced so many games with such differing themes. Most games have playing times, of almost 15 minutes so are fast paced and don't need alot of time commitment from players, unless of policy you get addicted and the winner is the first to reach four games!

Lego Hogwarts Game describe

The Lego Hogwarts Game is an ingenious strategy game for kids with its extra sliding block puzzle. This is no ifs ands or buts inspired by the tantalizing stairs of the Hogwarts Castle. The game has 5 extra micro figures, Harry Potter of course and also Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy and Albus Dumbledore. There are also one Hogwarts trainee micro outline from each "house" of Hogwarts.

The game has no ifs ands or buts two parts, assembling the pieces and playing the game. The Lego part is not too difficult to assemble, it took our kids less than an hour and they had a lot of fun doing it so it can probably be done much faster. Create is great and artful, and the building perceive is very entertaining. The game board is not so big so we don't have to take it down, it now has its place on one small table where we play the game. It should be noted though that the game board no ifs ands or buts fits back into the box for storage!

Lego

The game consists of 16 portable tiles and twelve of those function as portable stairs. The chronic 4 are various classrooms and these classroom contains homework items the players must accumulate in order to win the game. The player who get one of each kind of these items and take them back to their respective house wins the game. The Lego Hogwarts Game is exceptionally playable and invites kids to think and plan, and also to cooperate. It is tantalizing to succeed the discussions that take part when especially the younger players discuss strategies and plans they have in mind for the game. Often our kids refer to the books and films about Harry Potter and his friends.

To the game there is a Lego dice and the dice determines how many stair shifts a player can make. After the dice is thrown, one of the stair tiles is temporarily removed and any number of stairs and classrooms adjacent to the now empty space can be moved to that space. As soon as that space is filled, someone else space is revealed. When the shifts are completed, the player replaces the stair tile that was temporarily removed. Then the player moves her or his character to any orthogonally adjacent stair or classroom tile. It can sound a bit confusing but is not that difficult once you see it happen on the game board.

There is much more to be said about this game and the rules but I'll end with telling that in our house we decided to make adjustments to the rules and this has no ifs ands or buts made it an even more tantalizing game to play. The rules we now have will probably be changed many times more! Finally, the Lego Hogwarts Game is an excellent kids' and adult game giving everybody an chance to originate and share some major fun.
